My Birthday Weekend
I'm trying to help Dawn in her quest for blogging on Fridays. In her defense, she has a blog written that was due last friday, but did not want to post it incomplete. I think she's been more busy than me lately. From work to the advocacy to friends and me, she is always moving. As I write this, she is shopping with a friend.
Tonight we're taking part of a dinner to our friends (also our sunday school teachers) and another family is taking the other part of the meal. I thought it was kind of weird that Dawn planned on taking barbeque beans, cherry cobbler and hamburger buns until she told me that was only part of the meal.
Tomorrow we're going to New Orleans to visit the Audubon Zoo with our friends Lance and Michelle. Dawn is very excited to see Michelle who is one of her best friends but moved back home to Tulsa at the end of the summer. Michelle has never been to a zoo! How does a person make it 25 years of life, go to college, live in several different places, and work as a teacher but never have been to a zoo? I couldn't believe it either! Especially since zoo's are one of my favorite places to visit. Dawn and I even had season passes to the zoo in Ft. Worth. I know what you're thinking: DORKS! I'm secure in my dorkiness. Since I learned Michelle had never been to a zoo, it has become my mission to take her to the zoo for her first experience. Baton Rouge has a zoo, but it's small and not that great, so hopefully the Audubon Zoo will not be a disappointment.
Our backup plan for bad weather is to go to the National World War II museum just down the street. It looks like a really neat place too. Maybe we'll just have to do both! Lance would really enjoy going there. Then we're heading back to BR for dinner with our Cancun crew to eat and exchange pictures from the trip.

Danny and Gladys in town
Danny and Gladys (Dawn's parents) came to stay with us for a couple days. They got here thursday night and left after lunch on sunday. On friday, Dawn and her mom went shopping together, but I was the one who brought it home - they found some dress shirts on sale and bought them for me. I don't really need any more shirts, but according to Dawn, my closet needs more color. Apparently all my shirts are blue or green and that's boring. So now I have, get this, BURNT ORANGE! I mean really? I might as well wear a big longhorn on my chest. The other two shirts are slittery purple and reddish-pink. Ok, laugh it up. But actually, I have to say I don't look bad in them. But BURNT ORANGE? They could have called it something else and I wouldn't have even noticed. Something like pumpkin spice or carrot or another girly name for a color. But I'm grateful for the thought and the little 5 year olds in Bangledesh who made it. Ozasro dhanyabad.
When I got home from work, we went to a pottery place to paint pottery. Dawn painted a business card holder to match her business cards for her desk at work. I painted a cereal bowl camo and Danny and Gladys worked on a plate together. I got a call that they have been fired and are ready to be picked up. I'll post pictures of the final products.
After the artsy painting, my in-laws took me to a restaurant of my choice to celebrate my birthday. I chose a new Mexican place called Coyote Blues. We were told it would be an hour and a half wait but only took about 20 min. We ordered fajitas for two and split them between the four of us and still had left overs! The food was good, but it was so loud from the crowd and the background music we were practically yelling to hear each other!
On saturday Danny and Gladys drove to New Orleans for Danny's high school reunion. Dawn and I planned to go to LSU to tailgate with some friends from church for the Florida game. We drove to campus and could not find anywhere to park within reasonable walking distance so we decided to forego the tailgaiting. We kept driving and ended up at a local dive called George's. We had cheeseburgers that were pretty tasty and then we went shopping for groceries and shoes for Dawn.
Back at the ranch, I watched Texas Tech slaughter Kansas State and part of the LSU v. Florida game. Dawn made sloppy joes for dinner. She found a recipe that uses the same base meat for several different entrees. The first night of the recipe, she cooked the meat, added sauce and made lasagne with it. For the sloppy joes she pulled the precooked meat out of the fridge, added some corn and bell peppers and slapped it on a bun. Her parents were back by then and we all ate together.
On Suday, we all went to church. I skipped sunday school to donate blood with the blood bank company who had their rv set up in the parking lot. Random! I was shocked when they rattled off an address from when I lived in Lubbock 7 years ago. So gave them an updated one. After church we went to lunch at Qdobas and the rents headed home.

THE NEED FOR A NEW POST
Ok. Ok. It has been brought to my attention by my good old friend Tyler Roberts that it has been two months since I blogged. Thank you Tyler for keeping me on my toes and giving me a little nudge. It's nice to know someone misses reading "Downings on the Bayou".
Please know that I haven't forgotten about you all. It basically boils down to not making blogging a priority.
In an effort to do a better job and keep you up to date with the Downings in Baton Rouge my goal is to blog at least twice a month on Friday mornings. I know that doesn't sound like much but baby steps lead to bigger steps in the future. The post you are currently reading does not count in the new goal of 2 x a month on Fridays. You can expect your first post tomorrow morning.
Until tomorrow morning,
DD
