The Culprit

The Resident

OK, Jordan and I watched a scary movie the other night. The movie was called, The Resident starring Hilary Swank who moves into this apartment only to discover that the deal was too good to be true. Her landlord has secret doors into her apartment and looks thought the mirrors and walls to spy on her. Creepy right? Well that was a little to realistic for me. I have woken up twice in the middle of the night with suspicion of someone being in the apartment. Really!
well last night took the cake. First, I have to describe the scene to you. In our bedroom we close all the doors and curtains to keep out all the light since the sun doesn't set till about 11:30pm and rises at about 5:00am and it's never totally dark like back home. it's kind of like a full moon every night. So, we are in bed, I have my eye mask on blocking out the light given out from other electrical lights on the TV, Internet, and cable routers. I also do not have my contacts in so I am basically blind.
I wake up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and as I stumble around the bed, over the comforter on the floor and to the bathroom. I run into the bathroom door that Jordan has requested we keep closed to block out the light. When I wiped my eyes I saw someone in front of me and screamed and tried to push them away from in front of me.
That someone was my reflection in the mirror on the door and the door did not budge. Mind you I am half asleep. I fused, "I hate that bathroom door." When I finally open the door and get into the bathroom I burst out laughing because of the whole incident. I take care of business and get back in bed thinking about the incident....I start giggling and giggling, and giggling. My laugh box was turned upside down.
If only I had a video camera running we could have made millions on AFV (America's Funniest Home Videos). AKA Jordan's favorite show with a close second being Wipe Out.

Picture of the culprit to come.

Birthday Best

My husband is the best! He made my day special by bringing me coffee and breakfast in bed. Just when I thought it couldn't get any better he gave me an electric kettle which is a must up here since there is a lot of hot chocolate and tea drinking. I never knew about electric kettles until we started our trip North. Some of the hotels and B&B that we stayed in had them available to the guest 24 hours with tea and hot chocolate fixings. I thought, "this is terrific." the water is always ready at the push of a button and by the time you unwrap your tea bag or pour in the contents of the HC packet it's ready to pour. He got me the cutest little red one that looks like a real kettle. He also got me a gift certificate to the nail/massage salon nearby. I feel a pampering day coming on. Maybe after the move into our house.
Yesterday afternoon I met Jordan, Ben, Stephanie and their boys for lunch at the BX. it's funny to go to the lunch on the base because everyone looks alike....All the airmen wear their ABU's so it's hard to identify someone specifically from a distance becausee they all look the same. Anyway, i had Popeye's Chicken, the closest thing they have to southern Louisiana cooking up here and that is a definite stretch.
After lunch the spouses were invited to attend orientation with their airmen because the topic was WILDLIFE. We were informed in this session on what to do when you encounter bear, moose, and wolves.

Bear: If you encounter a bear in the wild talk to it and make yourself as big as possible. Back away from the bear and go back the way you came. if the bear charges at you you must decide if it is a defense or offense. if it is defensive you should back away (do not run) in fact you never run because they are predators so if you run you have just made the game fun. If the bear makes contact with you curl up in a ball and protect your head and neck. If it is an offensive attack fight back aiming for the head and eyes. Always carry bear spray/pepper spray and have a good aim.

Moose: They like their space so give them room. If you encounter one on the trail back away and talk to the animal, do not yell at them. go back the way you came. If the moose is angry you will see the hair stand up on their neck, the ears go down, the mouth start salivating in abundance. If the head goes down, RUNNNNNN and try to put something between you and the moose. If you get caught curl up in a ball protecting your head and neck. NEVER come between a momma moose and her calf.

The wildlife training was actually informative. the speaker explained the different seasons for the animals and what is taking place in their lives such as mating, giving birth, hibernating, etc.

We have defiantly encountered moose and calves on the bike trails. Fortunately, we were prepared and the encounter was good.

After wildlife training I went shopping for furniture with Stephanie and her boys followed by a little shopping on my own.

Jordan finished off the special day by taking me to dinner at the Snow Goose for some Alaskan Seafood. I had an amazing dish, Apple Ale Glazed Salmon. YUMMMM! Followed by an amazing Blueberry Cheesecake.

it was a great day !

Counting Down the Days

Not until we return to the lower 48 but until we move into our house. It was the first one that we set foot in and we knew right away it was the one. It was hard to hide our excitement. We are so excited to have found a house to lease instead of having to buy right away. Jordan and I were still torn between the pros and cons of buying that we didn't feel we should act now. We would like to check out the town and decide if we like it here or not. Buying a house is a long term commitment and in the first week its hard to tell if we wanted to stay a while. We love the scenery and love the size of the city. So, if you were waiting to plan your vacation to Alaska now is the time. we have two spare rooms and space for RV parking in our driveway (random), but just in case you are itching to drive the Alaskan Highway. Which I highly recommend. It was an amazing drive and we got to take advantage of a lot of really great scenic routes along the way.

Jordan has started work this Wednesday. Well if you call more orientation work. While he is bringing home the bacon I am doing my best to spend it. Ha! Not really, but my job has been to find furniture for our spare rooms and our bedroom since we sold most everything when we moved from downtown BR to Seigen Lane. it's been fun, but i do have to say that the selection here is no where in comparison to the lower 48. Fewer furniture stores means limited selection.

We went "church shopping" on Sunday. We visited Rabbit Creek Baptist Church. Jordan was impressed with their website and the seminary training of the pastors so it was first on our list to visit. I call it shopping because it really is similar. You window shop by looking at their website and check out the ministries and staff. Next you visit one Sunday just attending the Church service and in this case that's all there was because they offer small groups around town in homes and at area businesses. Last Sunday was the end of their EDC (Expedition Day Camp) also known in the south as VBS (Vacation Bible School), so the children did a special song and the preteen praise band sang a song. that was really encouraging for me to see a church that was interested in seeing children learn about Jesus and offer opportunities for them to serve.
